Release of Children's Balloons and Sky Lanterns

Release of Children's Balloons and Sky Lanterns

Children's balloons are colored balloons made of latex or foil, inflated with helium gas that are commonly used as a toy or decoration.  Usually they are 25 -30 cm high and  they must not be tighed together or contain hard parts. Releases of children's balloons are forbidden during the aerodrome operational hours at a distance less than 5 km from the aerodrome reference point. Release of up to 100 children's balloons at the same time is not considered as group and mass release.

Glowing balloon-like objects (Sky lanterns) are small hot air balloons that are typically used in various celebrations or commemorations.  They are made of paper with an opening at the bottom where a small fire is suspended. Usually they are around 100 cm high and with a diameter of approximately 60 cm. Sky lanterns must not be tighed together. According to Fire Protection Act (Official Gazette no. 92/2010) release of sky lanterns can be only held with an approval by competent bodies of the local and regional government. Releases of sky lanterns are forbidden during the aerodrome operational hours at a distance less than 5 km from the aerodrome reference point. Release of up to 20 sky lanterns at the same time is not considered as group and mass release.

It is recommended for the organiser of release of both children's balloons and sky lanterns  to contact also the local community, the local police station, the operator of controlled or uncontrolled aerodrome/helidrome, the harbor master's office and Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection for obtaining other approvals if applicable.
