Eurocontrol’s Director General Visits Croatia

January 25, 2019

During his today’s visit to the Republic of Croatia, Eamonn Brennan, Director General of the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol), met with the leading people of Croatian aviation. The meeting was hosted by Croatia Control (CCL).

“Croatia is headed in the right direction, its performance indicators are good,” Brennan pointed out, praising our efforts in managing air traffic.

Looking back at the past year – the busiest one in the history of aviation – he presented the figures recorded in Eurocontrol’s member states, which had achieved an unprecedented high of 11 million flights, an increase by nearly 4%, but also 19 million minutes of en-route delay, an increase of 105% compared to the previous year.

That had brought about significant disruptions in air traffic, and Eurocontrol as the network manager had taken steps to reduce delays. The majority of delays (60%) had been caused by capacity and staff, a quarter by weather conditions and 14% by unforeseen events.

Comparing the data for Croatia, Eurocontrol’s DG said that over the last four years, traffic had increased by more than 20%, last year by 10.2% compared to 2017, with the expected increase of 7.2% in 2019. As far as delays were concerned, 16.1 min/flight had been the average delay in 2018, five times more than in 2017.

Along with CCL’s representatives led by Vlado Bagarić, CCL’s Director General, other members of the meeting included the representatives of the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Croatian Civil Aviation Agency, Croatia Airlines and Zagreb International Airport.
