The Monte Kope radar system, situated on the former military primary radar site near Banjole in the Pula area, was launched on 24 May 2016.
The value of the radar system procured through a public procurement procedure from the Spanish company Indra is approx. EUR 0.9 million. The total investment by Croatia Control Ltd., including the costs of refurbishment of the radar facility, construction of the antenna pillar, equipping the system with the secondary support systems and a communication system was approx. EUR 1.5 million.
This project ensures multiple radar coverage in the busiest operational ACC sector West and in the Pula terminal zone. It also ensures necessary capacities and enhancement of safety and quality of air navigation services in that part of the airspace.
In the course of design and implementation phases of the Monte Kope project, all measures stipulated by the Regulations on Protection against Electromagnetic Fields were implemented, which had been one of the Special Requirements by the Ministry of Health.
The measurements taken indicate that the exposure of people to electromagnetic radiation near the radar is insignificantly low, i.e. that the parameters of the strength of electromagnetic field (flux density and electric field) are a few levels lower than exposure limit values stipulated by the Regulations.
Croatia Control shall continue to strengthen its airspace control as required by the European air navigation safety standards, mostly because of the air traffic growth over Croatia. The next steps shall be the implementation of the new surveillance technologies – multilateration (MLAT) and automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) technologies.
