New Monte Kope Radar for Improved Air Traffic Safety

July 13, 2016

The Monte Kope Secondary Surveillance Radar provides double coverage even at low altitudes, which ensures better quality of our services and a great improvement in air traffic safety, not only in Istria and Kvarner regions, but also beyond, said Dragan Bilać, CCL’s Director General, on the location of the radar station in Banjole. He also pointed out that this state-of-the-art radar emits several times less electromagnetic radiation than the prescribed limits.

CCL’s Director General took the opportunity to thank the Istria County for their support in the realization of this project worth 11 million HRK, the launching of which occurred at the end of May this year, and today it was commemorated by a meeting in the County, and then by a tour of the radar. Both events were attended by Anton Kliman, the Minister of Tourism, Valter Flego, the Prefect of Istria County, Dinko Staničić, the Director of the Civil Aviation Sector at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure, the representatives of the radar manufacturer from the Spanish company Indra, as well as CCL’s employees.

We are aware of our importance for the functioning of the local community and local budgets because all of those factors have an effect on the Croatian economy, and this radar is the fruit of our labor during the past three years, said Dragan Bilać with a special thanks to the Ministry of Defence, which provided support during the construction of the radar in the former location of a military radar. Speaking about the impact of CCL on the Croatian economy, he stressed that CCL is the third largest exporter of services in Croatia, and that the majority of their services is provided to foreign airline companies.

The Minister of Tourism stressed the importance of safety in Croatia as a tourist destination, and safe infrastructure certainly contributes to that idea. Istria is predominantly a car destination, but thanks to projects like this we can take a greater number of airplanes in our airports and thus change the guest structure, said Anton Kliman.

The Prefect of Istria County thanked CCL for a valuable investment in the radar that will, along with the other three radars in Croatia, contribute to even more guests visiting Istria, but also to improved safety of local residents, adding that the project fits perfectly into the Master Plan of Tourism Development in Istria and the Master Plan for Pula Airport Development.
